Mourinho gives Manchester United ‘A’ for effort, not performance

It wasn’t pretty, but Manchester United worked hard enough to get a win.

That’s Jose Mourinho’s assessment of the Red Devils’ 1-0 win over visiting Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday.

United’s advantage was Lewis Dunk‘s wicked deflection of an Ashley Young shot, one that came after a wrongly-given corner kick.

Mourinho admitted that Brighton deserved a point from the match. From the BBC:

“They gave us probably the hardest match we’ve had this season. We had amazing chances a couple of days ago and we couldn’t score, today we did it. Congratulations to them for their performance, congratulations to my boys. My boys they didn’t play well but they gave everything. The boys they don’t deserve bad words from me.”

That’s about right. It was a miserable downpour of a day at Old Trafford, and Brighton was unlucky not to grab at least a point. Yet Mourinho can’t discredit his men for giving what they could in the middle of a three-match week.
