Atlanta United’s Barco to miss 4-6 weeks

Ezequiel Barco, one of the most-hyped players to join MLS – despite having never kicked a ball in an MLS match – will have to wait at least a month to make his debut for Atlanta United.

The club announced on Wednesday that the Argentine attacker will miss 4-6 weeks with a right quad strain suffered in training. Barco had appeared in three preseason games so far, including scoring a nice goal against Minnesota United, but now will be sidelined until April.

It’s a big blow to MLS fans, who had hoped to see the player Atlanta United broke the MLS transfer record for. At the same time, Atlanta United should be okay with the likes of Miguel Almiron, Josef Martinez and Hector Villalba still fit and available to play. In addition, a youngster like Andrew Carleton could be promoted onto the bench – or even in the lineup – with Barco’s absence.
