Aston Villa beats sluggish Tottenham as pressure mounts on Conte

Aston Villa stunned Tottenham on New Year’s Day as Antonio Conte’s sluggish side were deservedly beaten at home as their top four push continues to falter.

This was not a happy start to 2023 for Tottenham.

FULL MATCH REPLAY

Second half goals from Emiliano Buendia and Douglas Luiz did the damage as Villa were well organized and spirited on the counter and Unai Emery’s side continue to climb up the Premier League table as his appointments has had the desired impact.

As for Spurs, they were out of sorts from start to finish as they continue to lose ground in the top four battle. The big question now will be about how much longer Antonio Conte will stick around as his contract is up at the end of this season. Anything other than a big splurge of signings in January and Conte could be off.

With the win Aston Villa move on to 21 points and are pushing for a top 10 finish. Tottenham have now won just one of their last four games and sit on 30 points and are two points behind fourth-place Manchester United who have played a game less.

Conte could walk early as sluggish Spurs lose more ground

Yes they are missing Kulusevski, Bentancur and Richarlison who would have brought more creativity but Tottenham should have much more about them than this display. They looked disinterested from the very start and even though we are used to them starting games sluggishly then roaring back in the second half, they were even worse in the second half this time. The fact Antonio Conte has yet to commit his future beyond this season says it all. He doesn’t truly believe Tottenham will give him the squad he needs to be successful in north London. They are in the Champions League last 16 this season but they are now in a real battle to qualify for it next season by finishing in the top four of the Premier League. There is a malaise at Spurs which centers around the uncertainty about Conte’s future. They need January additions but they also need commitment from their manager. If they doesn’t arrive soon then they should part ways as soon as possible. They have the talent to finish in the top four, as they proved last season, but right now this is only heading one way: Tottenham out of the top four and without Conte as their boss.

Stars of the show

Ashley Young: Locked down Spurs’ left flank and so reliable defensively. Great clearance off the line in the first half.

Douglas Luiz: Scored the second goal and dominated midfield. He is back to his best.

Boubacar Kamara: What a player he is. So dominant in the tackle and went through so much defensive work.

What’s next?

Aston Villa host Wolves on Wednesday Jan. 4, while Tottenham travel to Crystal Palace on the same day.

FULL TIME: Tottenham 0-2 Aston Villa – That was putrid from Spurs and Antonio Conte had a face like thunder throughout. Unai Emery’s Villa were excellent and took their chances. What a win for Villa but there are some big questions for Spurs to answer, especially regarding the future of their manager.

GOALLLL!!!! Douglas Luiz with a superb goal to make it 2-0 to Aston Villa. John McGinn plays in Luiz and his first touch is good and he clips home a second. Villa in dreamland. Nightmare start to 2023 for Tottenham.

Spurs just haven’t responded to going behind. At all.

GOALLLLL! Aston Villa lead at Tottenham. Douglas Luiz’s effort from distance sees Hugo Lloris spill the shot and Watkins was quick to react and set up Buendia to slot home. Horrible error from the Spurs goalkeeper. 1-0 to Villa and the home fans are stunned.

HALF TIME: Tottenham 0-0 Aston Villa – Yet another slow first half from Spurs. Less said about the first 45 minutes of Premier League action in 2023 the better… We move!

OFF THE LINE! Ashley Young heads the ball off the line as Harry Kane’s header looked destined to sneak in. That all came after Robin Olsen was forced off his line and a cross was clipped in.

Not too much going on in the way of clear chances. Spurs are huffing and puffing and Villa are sitting deep and trying to play on the counter. The away side haven’t had any real chances on the break but Unai Emery will be happy with their defending.

After a slow start to the game for Spurs (shock) the hosts are starting to wake up. Doherty and Gil are causing some problems down Tottenham’s right flank.

Key storylines & star players

Slow starts plagued Tottenham prior to the World Cup break, and the problem appears no closer to being solved after spotting Brentford two goals before the hour mark. Harry Kane and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg struck back in the 65th and 71st minutes, but that’s all Spurs would get despite out-shooting Brentford 6-1 after the equalizer. With 262 career goals for Tottenham, Kane is now just five shy of breaking Jimmy Greaves’ club record of 266 (all competitions).

Aston Villa, meanwhile, returned from the World Cup break with a 3-1 home defeat to Liverpool for the first Premier League setback of the Unai Emery era (2W-0D-1L). Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez was unavailable for the Boxing Day fixture after playing hero in the World Cup final just eight days earlier, but the Argentine is expected to return to action for his club on Sunday.

Leicester relegated despite final day win over West Ham

Leicester City has been relegated to the Championship despite getting the win it needed to have hope of survival: a 2-1 defeat of West Ham United at the King Power Stadium on Championship Sunday.

Leicester entered the day two points back of Everton for 17th place on the Premier League table and got goals from Harvey Barnes and Wout Faes to secure three points, but Everton outlasted Bournemouth 1-0 to match the Foxes and keep them below the dreaded line.

Leicester finishes its season with 34 points in 18th place on the Premier League table.

West Ham, on the other hand, will be forgiven for focusing on the Europa Conference League Final but fought hard for an equalizer even though it only found a Pablo Fornals marker after Leicester had gone ahead two. The Irons finish 14th with 40 points.

Too little, too late for Foxes

“Too little, too late” may go down as the story of the Foxes season.

Leicester did not get its recruitment plans correct — somewhat forced by Financial Fair Play — and then put too much faith in Brendan Rodgers to make things work.

Dean Smith got some performances out of this men, few better than Sunday, but this ultimately feels like a fait accompli: Sometimes, the whole is less than the sum of its parts. Despite big seasons from Harvey Barnes and James Maddison, this was that.

There’s also the question of playing for a draw against Newcastle on Monday, but let’s not heap criticism on Dean Smith for taking a calculated risk. He deserves better.

Leicester would love to see Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Wilfred Ndidi pass fitness checks, but Dean Smith will have rested and ready Harvey Barnes and James Maddison in a bid to score more goals than the Irons.

West Ham could be seeing the penultimate appearance of Declan Rice in an Irons shirt, as the big-money midfielder is being linked to several big clubs in the Premier League.

Leeds relegated from Premier League as Harry Kane hits 30-goal mark

Leeds (31 points – 19th place) have been relegated from the Premier League after they were beaten 4-1 by Tottenham at Elland Road on the final day of the 2022-23 season.

[ MORE: How to watch Premier League in USA ]

Harry Kane scored twice more to complete his second 30-goal season, as Tottenham (60 points – 8th place) missed out on the Premier League’s final European place with Aston Villa beating 6th-place Brighton to qualify for the Europa Conference League. Now, a painfully pivotal summer of hirings and signings awaits for Spurs.

It was a nightmare start for Leeds, who needed not only a victory of their own but also points to be dropped by both Everton and Leicester above them. Tottenham’s first foray into Leeds’ penalty area ended with Kane hammering the ball past Joel Robles.

WATCH LEEDS vs TOTTENHAM FULL MATCH REPLAY

New half, same story for Leeds, who conceded once again barely a minute into the second half. Kane turned provider this time, as he lofted a blind ball into the channel for the overlapping Pedro Porro, who barely had a sight of goal with Robles smothering the near post. But, Porro placed a pinpoint strike just inside the far post from a tight angle.

Leeds gave themselves a faint hope when he slotted home after Georginio Rutter picked him out between two defenders in the 67th minute, but Kane answered just two minutes later with his second of the day and the 280th — and potentially final — goal of his Tottenham career.

Leeds United relegation reaction

Club statement:

“Everyone connected with Leeds United is deeply disappointed by the club’s relegation back to the Sky Bet Championship, after three seasons in the Premier League.

“Relegation is painful, and we apologize to our fanbase that the performances this season have not seen the club consolidate our status as we had all hoped.

“However, Leeds United remains in a strong position to build a team that can challenge for promotion from the Championship next season.

“We know things have not been good enough, we know we have to improve, but please be assured that behind the scenes we have worked hard to ensure that the past will not be repeated. Our focus is now on how we get straight back to the Premier League.

“Thank you for your unwavering support for the players and the badge, our objective is to continue to build the club into the one you deserve.”

Key storylines & star players

Leeds have had plenty of time opportunities to drag themselves out of the bottom-three and away from the relegation scrap as a whole, but they are now winless in their last eight games (0W-2D-6L) and have won just three of their last 24. Their biggest problem? The Premier League’s worst defensive record in 2022-23 — 74 goals conceded in 37 games. In each of the last four seasons, the side to concede the most goals has been relegated.

With another summer of uncertainty (from the manager to most of the first-team squad) on the cards for Spurs, Sunday could be the final time Harry Kane pulls on the white shirt of Tottenham, following reports this week that he will ask — or perhaps has already asked — to leave the club if a fair offer is made. Kane’s 278 goals make him the club’s all-time record goal scorer, and his departure could signal a full-blown tear-down and rebuild for the incoming manager still to be hired.
