Americans Abroad: Chandler, Gooch score; Reyna, Vassilev debut

The bar for the best weekend for Americans abroad in 2020 has been set.

After months with the under-19 side, 18-year-old Giovanni Reyna made his debut with Borussia Dortmund on Saturday. In England, Indiana Vassilev, 18, did exactly the same for Aston Villa, becoming the second youngest American to play in the Premier League.

Established Americans abroad like Timothy Chandler scored Eintracht Frankfurt’s match winner, while Lynden Gooch struck from distance for Sunderland in England’s League One.

Here is a list of several other USMNT affiliates making a name for themselves (or not) abroad this weekend.

Premier League

Christian Pulisic, Chelsea — The USMNT star continues to recover from an abductor injury.

DeAndre Yedlin, Newcastle — Yedlin is also recovering from an injury, and did not dress for Newcastle on Saturday.

Indiana Vassilev, Aston Villa – The 18-year-old came off the bench and played 23 minutes in his Premier League debut for Aston Villa. Villa drew 1-1 with Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday.

EFL Championship

Duane Holmes, Derby County — Holmes played 90 minutes in Derby’s 1-0 win over Hull City on Saturday.

Antonee Robinson, Wigan Athletic — Robinson started and played 90 minutes in Wigan’s 2-1 loss to Swansea City on Saturday.

Matt Miazga, Reading (loan from Chelsea) — The 24-year-old dressed but didn’t feature in Reading’s 2-0 loss to Millwall.

Eric Lichaj, Hull City — The Tigers’ defender started and played for Hull.

Geoff Cameron, QPR — The 34-year-old defender played 90 minutes in QPR’s 1-0 victory ver Leeds United on Saturday.

Eredivisie

Haji Wright, VVV-Venlo — Wright came off the bench and played five minutes in Venlo’s 1-1 draw with PSV.

Desevio Payne, FC Emmen — The U-23 MNT fullback is injured and didn’t feature for FC Emmen.

Bundesliga

Timmy Chandler, Eintracht Frankfurt — The fullback played 90 minutes and scored Frankfurt’s match-winning goal on Saturday against Hoffenheim.

Tyler Adams, RB Leipzig — Adams started and played 86 minutes in Leipzig’s 3-1 win over Union Berlin. The midfielder completed 84 percent of his passes.

Weston McKennie, Schalke — McKennie is still having some setbacks from his shoulder injury. The midfielder didn’t dress for Schalke due to fitness issues over the weekend.

Zack Steffen, Fortuna Dusseldorf — Steffen is inactive with an injury.

Alfredo Morales, Fortuna Dusseldorf Morales started and played 71 minutes in Fortuna’s 1-0 loss to Werder Bremen.

Josh Sargent, Werder Bremen  The 19-year-old started and played 86 minutes on Saturday. It’s refreshing to see Sargent back on the field, getting regular playing time after the injury.

Fabian Johnson, Borussia Mönchengladbach Johnson was on Mönchengladbach’s bench but didn’t play.

Honorable Mentions

Lynden Gooch, Sunderland — Gooch has been superlative for Sunderland lately, and on Saturday, he was rewarded with this match-deciding goal:

Berhalter announces 25-man USMNT roster for January camp

Nearly half of the USMNT’s January training camp roster is comprised of players without caps.

Twelve is a big number, and three of those uncapped players come from outside of Major League Soccer.

Bryang Kayo (out of contract), Christian Cappas (Hobro), and Ulysses Llanez (Wolfsburg) join up with Gregg Berhalter’s men.

[ MORE: Premier League schedule ]

Kayo, 17, is a DC United youth academy product who’s been on the books for USL sides Loudoun United and Orange County SC in recent seasons.

Texas-born Cappas, 20, has three assists in 19 matches for Hobro, while 18-year-old Llanez has 10 goals and three assists in 11 matches for Wolfsburg’s U-19 side.

Jordan Morris, Bill Hamid, Aaron Long, Cristian Roldan, Paul Arriola, and Gyasi Zardes will help indoctrinate the new boys into the U.S. senior set-up.

Long may again be linked with West Ham and other European suitors, which could change some things.

MLS is heavily represented during January camps because they do not fall inside of a FIFA international break window.

The camps provide an excellent opportunity for MLS players to make a statement, and they’ll get to do so in Qatar from Jan. 5-25 before meeting up with Costa Rica in California.

It will be interesting to see whether the U.S. adds a Middle Eastern opponent while overseas.

USMNT January camp roster

It was a blatantly unbalanced weekend for Americans abroad, with Christian Pulisic left on the bench in Chelsea’s win, Geoff Cameron scoring his first goal in over a year, and Tyler Adams making his return to RB Leipzig’s starting lineup.

But also a positive one, as Eric Lichaj also and Terrence Boyd also headlined the weekend, with one assisting in Hull City’s commanding win and the other scoring in Germany’s third division, respectively.

Here is a list of several other USMNT affiliates making a name for themselves (or not) abroad this weekend.

The Bundesliga keeps delivering the goods one day after Dortmund and Leipzig’s 3-3 thriller.

Late heroics from a teenage debutant gave Bayern Munich a place four points back of the table lead in a midweek Bundesliga match day with plenty of goals.

[ MORE: Premier League schedule ]

Elsewhere, Gladbach rejoined RB Leipzig on a league-best point total, while Schalke made it five teams within five points of the top with a draw at Wolfsburg.

Bayer Leverkusen 0-1 Hertha Berlin

Jurgen Klinsmann scored his best result yet of a very young tenure with Hertha Berlin, surprising the hosts through Karim Rekik‘s 64th minute goal.

Bayer had 71 percent of the ball, but the visitors won’t care one bit.

Hertha is 2-1-1 since Klinsmann took the reins ahead of a daunting run of fixtures versus Borussia Dortmund (loss), Eintracht Frankfurt (draw), Freiburg (win), and now Bayer.

Borussia Monchengladbach 2-0 Paderborn

Gladbach scored an expected win over its last place visitors to climb level on points with leaders RB Leipzig. Lars Stindl had a goal and an assist, setting up Alassane Plea for the opener just after halftime. USMNT veteran Fabian Johnson came off the bench late for Gladbach.

Wolfsburg 1-1 Schalke

Former Newcastle man Kevin Mbabu scored an 82nd minute equalizer as the hosts claimed a point against David Wagner‘s visitors. Schalke’s goal came in the 50th minute through Ozan Kabak.

USMNT center back John Brooks went the distance again for Wolfsburg, with one shot, four interceptions, and 37-of-50 passing out of the back.

Freiburg 1-3 Bayern Munich

Welcome to the show, Joshua Zirkzee.

Bayern’s 18-year-old Dutch prospect made his Bundesliga debut in the 90th minute and scored the match winner in the third minute of stoppage.

He entered the day with four senior minutes, all coming in the Champions League versus Spurs.

Serge Gnabry set up the goal and scored one of his own in the fifth minute of stoppage time to erase any doubt of three points.

The opener comes with an especially nice highlight for Canada’s brightest product, as Alphonso Davies flew down the wing to set up some Polish striker for his 30th goal of the season. It’s December.

Eintracht Frankfurt 2-4 Koln

A 2-0 lead for the hosts after 30 minutes is a thing of the past thanks to goals from four different scorers, two set up by second half sub Florian Kainz.

Filip Kostic set up both of Eintracht’s goals, while USMNT wide man Timothy Chandler saw a yellow card on a fairly rough day.
