MUST SEE: Full highlights of Liverpool’s epic penalty shootout

15 rounds. 30 shots. 20 minutes.

That’s how the penalty shootout went down between Liverpool and Middlesbrough in their third round League Cup match at Anfield.

Tied 1-1 after 90 minutes, Liverpool seemed to have found the winner when the young Spaniard Suso put the Reds ahead in the 109th minute, but Middlesbrough didn’t lay down. Pushing through the final seconds of stoppage time, Middlesbrough drew a penalty in the 123rd minute, which was subsequently converted by Patrick Bramford, sending the match into a penalty shootout.

What ensued was the joint highest-scoring penalty shootout in League Football history. At one point, 20 straight shots were converted. Both goalkeepers were forced to shoot (both scored) before the teams came full circle to the top of the order. Finally in the 15th round, Albert Adomah missed wide to the goalkeeper’s left, ending the epic shootout with Liverpool surviving another day.

League Cup Roundup: Liverpool survive 15-round shootout, Arsenal out

The third round of the League Cup got underway today with ten games, including three all-Premier League match-ups. Southampton earned a hard win away at Arsenal, while Stoke City came from behind to defeat Sunderland. Everton looked sluggish once again as Swansea City handed the Toffees a 3-0 defeat.

Liverpool will move onto the fourth round after a wild match that saw Championship side Middlesbrough force penalties with a goal in the 123rd minute. The shootout went an amazing 15 rounds before an Albert Adomah miss gave Liverpool the 14-13 win in one of the most unbelievable games you will ever see.

Arsenal 1 Southampton 2

Ronald Koeman’s men continue their strong run of play with a big 2-1 win at the Emirates. First half goals from Dusan Tadic and Nathaniel Clyne helped lead the Saints over Arsenal following Alexis Sanchez’s opener.

Sunderland 1 Stoke City 2

Liverpool 2 Middlesbrough 2 (Liverpool wins 14-13 on penalty kicks)

A 109th minute goal from Suso seemed to have secured the win for Liverpool, but a Patrick Bramford penalty on the brink of time forced the match into a shootout. Both teams put on a penalty exhibition, cooly burying shot after shot. Both goalkeepers were forced to shoot as it went 15 rounds before a Middlesbrough miss gave Liverpool the win 14-13.
