Eintracht Frankfurt striker Alex Meier, who leads the Bundesliga with 19 goals, could be out for the rest of the season with a knee injury.

The club already confirmed two days ago that Meier would miss Saturday’s match, a 3-0 loss to Bayern Munich, but now Bild is reporting that Meier’s patellar tendon problem is more serious than originally thought, and surgery may be required which would end his season.

Bild is reporting that Meier has dealt with the injury all season long, requiring constant injections and medication to keep the pain at bay. He is meeting today with the doctor in Switzerland who has operated on his knee three times in the past, and he could need a fourth.

The injury could not only end Meier’s season, but cause him to lose his Bundesliga goalscoring lead as well. Arjen Robben is two goals behind but out for most of the rest of the season injured as well. Robert Lewandowski is the true threat, three back of Meier on 16 goals with six matches left on the league schedule.

It’s also a huge loss for Eintracht Frankfurt. The club is just four points back of a Europa League spot in the Bundesliga table, and five of their final six matches are against top 10 teams. Frankfurt has scored 51 goals this year, fourth best in the German top flight, but Meier has been directly involved in 22 of them, nearly half. The next highest goalscorer on the club is 27-year-old Stefan Aigner with nine.
