Angel Gomes set to leave Manchester United

Angel Gomes is set to leave Manchester United as the teenage midfielder has failed to agree a new contract.

Gomes, 19, will be out of contract on July 1 (Wednesday) and despite Ole Gunnar Solskjaer previously seeming positive that the England U20 midfielder would remain at Old Trafford, it appears that is no longer the case.

Solskjaer was asked if Gomes will now leave Manchester United and this was his response.

“I’ve not heard from him last night or this morning so it seems like they haven’t managed to agree anything. The answer is probably short – yes,” Solskjaer.

It was previously reported that Gomes was going to sign as a free agent with Chelsea as the Man United academy product was despondent due to the lack of first team minutes he had received under Solskjaer.

A talented attacking midfielder who can play centrally or out wide, Gomes was regarded as a similar talent to Man City star Phil Foden and he captained the England U17 side to World Cup glory in 2017.

Gomes has featured just six times in all competitions this season and after making his first team debut at the age of 16 on the final day of the 2016-17 season, his chances at Man United have been few and far between.

In fairness to Gomes, he’s probably looked at Bruno Fernandes arriving, plus Anthony Martial, Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford being around and sees his path to the first team blocked. That’s not to mention Paul Pogba playing in his position too.

You can’t argue with him leaving for a Premier League club where he could play more regularly and it seems like that should have happened a year or so ago but his connection to Man United is so strong he’s waited it out.

In the latest transfer news Chelsea are said to be close to sealing a deal to sign Man United youngster Angel Gomes and Arsenal have been linked with Eray Comert.

First up: according to a report from the Daily Mirror, Chelsea are confident of signing young English midfielder Angel Gomes from Man United.

Gomes, 19, has been a star at youth level for Man United and England has looked composed when given the chance to play for the first team over the last few years. He captained England to U19 World Cup glory in 2018 and the creative midfielder is a diminutive figure but full of creativity and trickery.

Per the report, his contract runs out at Man United on July 1 and he’s rejected a new deal from the Red Devils. Gomes has hired ‘super agent’ Pina Zihavi and talks are said to have gone well with Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia.

Gomes hasn’t been handed as many opportunities at Man United as many thought he would have by now (six appearances this season) as other youngsters Mason Greenwood, Brandon Williams and Tahith Chong have all featured heavily in the Europa League and League Cup this season.

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has been keen to give young English players a chance with Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount, Reece James, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Fikayo Tomori all becoming regulars for the Blues during the 2019-20 season.

It would be a surprise if Gomes left Man United now but with Bruno Fernandes around and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer consistently linked with adding new attacking midfielders, moving to Chelsea may see his chances of minutes increase, especially with Willian and Pedro both having contracts which expire on July 1.

Arsenal have been linked with a move for Swiss center back Eray Comert, according to Turkish outlet Fanatik.

Comert, 22, has become a star at FC Basel and the report says Galatasary are also interested in signing him and Arsenal have tracked him. Comert has been key in Basel reaching the last 16 of the UEFA Europa League and putting together a mean defensive record. The Swiss giants have long produced a list of fine players with Mohamed Salah, Xherdan Shaqiri and Granit Xhaka previously playing for Basel.

Comert is said to be available for just $3 million this summer and given Arsenal’s financial position — they have agreed with their players to a pay cut over the next 12 months amid the coronavirus pandemic — Mikel Arteta will have to get creative in the transfer market.

With Pablo Mari at the club on loan and other center back options Calum Chambers, Rob Holding, Shkodran Mustafi, David Luiz and Sokratis already around, Arteta will clearly have to have a clear out before bringing in another center half.

It is clear Arsenal, and many other clubs across the planet, are now working on very different financial scenarios.

Manchester United capped off their tour to Australia and the Far East with a 2-1 win against Tottenham Hotspur in Shanghai, as tempers flared over in a tense International Champions Cup friendly at Hongkou Stadium.

Anthony Martial gave United the lead in the first half but Lucas Moura then equalized before academy youngster Angel Gomes, 18, scored the winner for the Red Devils who have a perfect record so far in preseason.

A feisty first half in China was played at a good tempo despite the heat, with youngsters Daniel James and Troy Parrot impressing for United and Spurs respectively.

Martial hit the post as he looked sharp throughout the first half, and soon the first goal of the game arrived.

After good work from Andreas Perreira, Martial finished from a tight angle past Paolo Gazzaniga at his near post. Spurs’ goalkeeper will not want to see that one back…

Moussa Sissoko clattered into James which resulted in a mini-scuffle between both sets of players with Harry Kane and Ashley Young at the center of things.

Before the break Tanguy Ndombele and Parrot were combining well and United almost doubled their lead as Paul Pogba smashed just off target.

United changed all 11 players at half time but Eric Bailly only lasted a few minutes as he came off injured, which was one of the only negatives for Solskjaer.

Spurs levelled the scores with 25 minutes to go as a tame effort from substitute Moura from the edge of the box somehow deflected past Sergio Romero and in.

Gomes then won it for United, as the youngster scored a superb goal to keep his impressive preseason going.

He was played in by Juan Mata before squeezing a shot home as it seemed he would pull the ball back for Marcus Rashford.

United now return to Europe having won all four of their preseason friendlies so far, as Solskjaer’s side are cranking through the gears impressively as they build up to the 2019-20 campaign.

Tottenham head to Munich to play against Real Madrid next week, plus either Bayern Munich or Fenerbache in the 2019 Audi Cup.
