MLS Snapshot: Los Angeles Galaxy 5-1 New York City FC

The game in 100 words (or less): A quad strain kept Frank Lampard out of the match for NYCFC, barring the much anticipated matchup of Lampard and Steven Gerrard. But the big names still delivered, as Robbie Keane scored twice and Giovani dos Santos scored another as the Los Angeles Galaxy dismantled NYCFC 5-1 in front of a sellout crowd at the StubHub Center. David Villa would score for NYC late in the game, but the match was already over at that point as the Galaxy’s offense dominated once again. Los Angeles became the first club in MLS history to score 1,000 goals.

Three moments that mattered

36′ — Gyasi Zardes opens the scoring — Los Angeles got on the board first thanks to some quick thinking off of a free kick. NYCFC’s defense was not ready when Robbie Keane whipped in a cross to a wide-open Gyasi Zardes, who headed the Galaxy into the lead.

54′ — Robbie Keane doubles the lead — Giovani dos Santos played Robbie Keane in behind the NYC defense, and the reigning MLS MVP finished with a cool chip over Josh Saunders. At the time, the goal made it 12 in 10 games for the Galaxy captain (in the 81st minute, he would score another to make it 13 in 10).

67′ — Giovani dos Santos joins in on the party — This time is was Keane to dos Santos, as the Mexican international got in behind the NYC defense and chipped over Josh Saunders in an eerily similar goal to Keane’s. This goal effectively ended the game.

Man of the match: Robbie Keane — Keane has been on a ridiculous run for the Galaxy, with his brace today making it 13 goals in 10 matches. Last season’s MLS MVP is not slowing down a bit.

MLS Snapshot: New York Red Bulls 2-0 New York City FC

The game in 100 words (or less): The Red Bulls won the first two New York derby’s against NYCFC, and today they kept the streak alive with a 2-0 win at Red Bull Arena. The match had a great atmosphere to it, with fans from both sides on their feet throughout the 90 minutes, and had one of the best feels of an MLS game you’ll see all year. Bradley Wright-Phillips opened the scoring with his tenth goal of the season, four of those coming against the crosstown rivals. New York remains red as the boys from Harrison take all nine points from the season series.

Three moments that mattered

8′ — Luis Robles stones Mix Diskerud — NYCFC had a golden opportunity to take an early lead, but Luis Robles stood tall in net for the Red Bulls. Angelino streaked down the left wing and threw in a cross to a wide open Mix Diskerud, who hit a strong volley on net. The volley was well struck, but Robles was able to get a hand on it to keep the match scoreless.

21′ — BWP puts Red Bulls in front — The match started with a quick pace, and the Red Bulls were the first to capitalize. Sacha Kljestan crossed a ball in the box and Jefferson Mena whiffed on his clearance attempt, as Bradley Wright-Phillips tapped it home for his 10th goal of the season.

85′ — Felipe finishes off the match for RBNY — Mike Grella made a run up the middle, nutmegged Frank Lampard, and played Felipe out to the left. Felipe took his time, cut his defender and surprised Josh Saunders with a quick shot low to the near post, giving the Red Bulls a 2-0 lead and the New York derby.

Man of the match: Mike Grella — After playing throughout League One in England for multiple clubs, Grella has regained his form back at home with the Red Bulls. The New York native was involved in the attack throughout the night, and made a great run to set up RBNY’s second goal.

LINEUPS

RBNY: Robles, Lawrence, Perrinelle, Miazga, Lade, Felipe, McCarty, Grellan (Veron, 86′), Kljestan (Davis, 76′), Sam (S. Wright-Phillips, 67′), B. Wright-Phillips

Goals: B. Wright-Phillips (21′), Felipe (85′)

MLS Snapshot: New York City FC 2-3 Montreal Impact (video)

The game in 100 words (or less/more): Games played at Yankee Stadium, while rarely resembling “good” soccer, sure are entertaining, aren’t they? So entertaining, in fact, that Saturday’s 3-2 goal fest between the Montreal Impact and New York City FC actually brought down the goals-per-game average over NYCFC’s last three home games (previously 8, now just 7). Horrid defending bit once again undid Jason Kreis’s side, as the Impact burned the NYCFC defense twice in the opening 35 minutes with simple long balls over the top. A pair of phantom penalty kick calls in the second half (one for each side) made the score 3-1 before Thomas McNamara scored an all-around beautiful team goal which, of course, featured the brilliance of David Villa. Andrea Pirlo made his first MLS start and played all 90 minutes, while Frank Lampard came off the bench in the 69th minute and made his MLS debut. NYCFC are three points back on Montreal for the sixth and final playoff place in the East, having already played three more games.

The moments that mattered

5′ — Oduro gets in behind and opens the scoring — Long ball over the top, Oduro gets behind the NYCFC defense, nutmegs goalkeeper Josh Saunders and slides the ball into an empty goal.

32′ — Piatti gets in behind and doubles the lead — Long ball over the top, Piatti gets behind the NYCFC defense, chips Saunders and watches the ball bounce into an empty goal.

85′ — Villa’s backheel flick sets up McNamara — Moments after Montreal went up 3-1, NYCFC hit back with a beautiful team goal. The vision and ensuing backheel flick from David Villa was pure class.

The game in 100 words (or less): Seven second-half goals were scored between New York City FC and Orlando City SC on Sunday. Defense is now optional (and strongly discouraged) at Yankee Stadium. Cyle Larin scored his first career hat trick for Orlando City, whileDavid Villa bagged two goals of his own to go along with tallies by Mix Diskerud, Thomas McNamara and Javier Calle for NYCFC. Andrea Pirlo made his Major League Soccer debut, coming on as a 57th-minute sub for Mehdi Ballouchy (isn’t MLS great?). The 36-year-old Italian was heavily involved in the buildup to NYCFC’s fourth goal of the afternoon, but later saw his secondary assist on the play taken away. With the victory, NYCFC have now leapfrogged Sunday’s opponent in the standings and occupy seventh place in the Western Conference. Sixth-place Montreal Impact have three games in hand.

Three moments that mattered

45′ — Villa’s exquisite first touch sets up the opener — Newsflash: David Villa is really, really, really good. Don’t believe me? I know you do, but watch this beauty of a first touch and placement on the finish anyway.

67′ — Villa loses Collin and bags his brace — After OCSC hit back not once, but twice, early in the second half, Villa gave NYCFC the lead once again when he lost Aurelien Collin and got a fortuitous deflection. Regardless, the vision and use/creation of space remains world-class from Villa.

85′ — Larin completes his hat trick, in vain — Shoutout to Larin for his first professional hat trick. Also, shoutout to Larin for the stellar finish on his third goal of the day. The first overall draft pick from the 2015 MLS SuperDraft now has nine goals in 15 appearances as a rookie.
