Sweden downs Denmark 4-1, will face Portugal in U-21 EURO final

Sweden scored two goals within three minutes in the first half and Denmark never recovered, as the Swedes move on to the final of the 2015 U-21 European Championship.

They will face Portugal to decide a champion, who put in an extremely convincing performance in a 5-0 win over Germany in the other semifinal.

Sweden and Portugal met in the group stage of the tournament, battling to a 1-1 draw with each side trading goals in the final ten minutes of the match.

John Guidetti opened the scoring for the Swedes from the penalty spot in the 23rd minute, a player who has impressed many with his form. Manchester City recently told Guidetti they would not renew his contract, as the striker never made an appearance for the club while playing on loan for Burnley, Stoke City and Celtic.

Three minutes later Simon Tibbling doubled Sweden’s lead, taking a pass from Guidetti and slotting past the Danish keeper. Less than a half hour into the match and with a two-goal lead, Sweden was in control.

Denmark would make it game however, making it 2-1 through a goal from Uffe Bech in the 63rd minute. Sweden had trouble clearing the box after a Denmark corner, and Bech cleaned up the scraps to get his nation back in it.

Sweden had scored a goal after the 80th minute in two of their three group matches, and their late-game antics continued, with Palermo winger Robin Quaison tallying in the 83rd before captain Oscar Hiljemark finished off Denmark deep into stoppage time.

The final against Portugal will be played on Tuesday night at Eden Stadium in Prague.

Jovetic injury, striker loans to limit Manchester City vs Arsenal on Saturday

Arsenal probably has a pretty good idea of who will start at striker for Manchester City this weekend, as Stevan Jovetic picked up a hamstring injury in the international window with Montenegro.

And Manchester’s freaking out a bit, man (or at least City fans are in a foul mood about their depth).

[ MORE: United gets Herrera back; Falcao could debut ]

That’s because Manuel Pellegrini did not pick up a striker in the transfer window and allowed two striker on loan moves: Alvaro Negredo to Valencia and John Guidetti to Celtic (though the latter hasn’t done much on the pitch for any club since his Feyenoord loan in 2012).

So Pellegrini’s a bit down on options right now.

From the Manchester Evening News:

The Blues are yet to release an update on his condition but Jovetic is not fit enough to take part in his country’s Euro 2016 qualifier against Moldova tonight and was not in the match squad.

Unless the injury is less severe than feared, it could well rule him out of the lunchtime clash with Arsenal on Saturday, leaving the Blues with just Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko as fit first-team strikers.

Negredo would not have been available in any case given his foot injury, but the Jovetic news is a cold reminder of City’s reduced options in his absence.

Fortunately for City, they are in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League this year and can handle an injury alright. But in terms of Saturday morning’s early cracker against Arsenal, the selections are pretty clear.

The match between Norwich and Stoke wasn’t truly a relegation six-pointer, but with all sides in the bottom half of the Premier League table still in danger of the drop, nerves were on edge. In the end, though, the teams split the points – a result that helps no one except others hoping to avoid the Championship.

It was the visitors that had the majority of the chances in the first half, but the Potters failed to make Norwich pay. The home fans grew increasingly restless as they watched John Ruddy forced into a save on Peter Crouch, Marko Arnautović putting his shot over the bar, and Ruddy saving, once more, this time off Jonathan Walters.

The Canaries’ first real chance came in the 28th minute, after Wes Hoolahan, getting his second start in a row, set up Robert Snodgrass. However, Asmir Begović pulled off an impressive save to deny the attacker.

Norwich’s game continued to improve at the start of the second half, and in the 56th minute, the hosts managed to break Begović. Bradley Johnson got on the end of a beautiful free kick from Snodgrass, heading on from just six yards out. It looked as though the Canaries would finally be feeling a bit more comfortable…

But just fifteen minutes later, Sebastien Bassong brought down John Guidetti inside the area. Walters, who’d scored the winner against Arsenal last weekend, stepped up to the spot. He put his shot into the top right corner, giving Stoke the equalizer.

Walters quickly went from hero to villain, however, picking up a red card not even five minutes later after clattering, studs up, into Alexander Tettey. Yet despite going down to ten men, Stoke managed to hang on for a point.
