Long-time Newcastle, Liverpool left back Enrique says he is cancer free

The world is full of bad news these days, but here’s a story that should be uplifting to you, regardless of who you support.

In an Instagram post on his official page, former Liverpool and Newcastle left back Jose Enrique announced that a recent MRI revealed he was free of cancer after an 11-month long battle. In May 2018, Enrique revealed after going to the hospital for some headaches and vision problems, doctors had found a tumor in his head, a rare type called a chordoma, per the BBC. This type of cancer grows along the spine, and in Enrique’s case, it was sitting behind his left eye along the base of his skull.

However, despite the world-shattering diagnosis, Enrique seems to have responded just as doctors had hoped to treatment, and he revealed he’s cancer free in the video below.

“We’re so happy about it,” Enrique said. “I can look forward now, not looking back, and I can keep fighting.”

Enrique played 127 times for Newcastle between 2007 and 2011 before moving to Liverpool, where he featured 99 times for the Reds before being released in 2016.

Now retired, it’s great to see Enrique is healthy and hopefully he can now focus on whatever pursuits he wants to make in the future, whether within or outside of soccer.

Former Newcastle and Liverpool defender Jose Enrique is now an agent, but the headache that came with a manager meeting had nothing to do with the conversation.

Enrique had a “brutal” headache following a meeting with Brighton and Hove Albion boss Chris Hughton, his former manager, and tests revealed a rare brain tumor (Spanish language link).

Enrique underwent brain surgery to remove the tumor and now faces 35 sessions of radiotherapy, only available in two European cities.

He lost more than a dozen pounds in a single week, calling it “the toughest time of my life.”

Deadline Day transfer rumor roundup: Hector to Chelsea, Berahino to Tottenham

Plenty or rumors are doing the rounds on Deadline Day and here’s a quick look at some of the gossip as we enter the final hours of the 2015 Summer Transfer Window.

Chelsea have been linked with a shock move for Reading center back Michael Hector. Sky Sports claim that Jose Mourinho is lining up a $7 million move for the Jamaican international. ProSoccerTalk has contacted a source close to the deal and it seems to have taken everyone by surprise. Watch this space.

Tottenham Hotspur have not given up on signing Saido Berahino from West Bromwich Albion. Spurs have already had two bids turned down by the Baggies for Berahino and the player has had a transfer request turned down by the Midlands club. West Brom are adamant he is going nowhere but several outlets, plus former Spurs boss and Deadline Day devotee Harry Redknapp, believe that the 22-year-old England striker could still arrive at White Hart Lane in a deal worth over $40 million.

ProSoccerTalk understands that Jonathan Walters is wanted by Norwich City, Leicester City and West Brom, with the Stoke City forward handing in a transfer request with the Potters as he only has one-year left on his current contract and negotiations over a new deal have broken down in recent days. Walters, 31, has scored 51 goals in 217 PL games for the Potters and would be a valuable addition to the three aforementioned teams.

PST also understands that Southampton is closing in on a $17.6 million move for Celtic’s center back Virgil van Dijk. The Dutchman, 24, has interested Saints for quite some time and his panache on the ball and power in defense is exactly what Ronald Koeman is looking for.

West Bromwich Albion have been linked with moves for Liverpool left back Jose Enrique and Crystal Palace midfielder Joe Ledley.

One man departing West Brom is Joleon Lescott, as the former Manchester City defender looks to be inching closer to a move to Aston Villa and has had a medical with the West Brom’s Midlands rivals.

Leicester City are said to be closing in on a season-long loan deal for Swansea City winger Nathan Dyer. The Englishman has fallen way down the pecking order at the Liberty Stadium and Leicester are keen to bolster their attacking options before the deadline.

Anfield exit looming? Balotelli, Borini left out of squad for Liverpool’s final preseason games

“Don’t let the door hit on the way out,” seems to be Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers’ message to his enigmatic Italian striker Mario Balotelli, and others, just nine days before the start of the 2015-16 Premier League season.

[ MORE: Thursday’s transfer rumor roundup ]

After scoring just one league goal in his debut season (16 appearances) at Anfield, Balotelli has once again been left out of Rodgers’ squad, alongside fellow Italian striker Fabio Borini and Spanish left back Jose Enrique, for the Reds’ final two games of the preseason, against HJK Helsinki (Saturday) and Swindon (Sunday).

Balotelli, Borini and Enrique were also omitted from Liverpool’s recent tour of the Far East and Australia. This has, of course, only served to further fuel speculation that Rodgers is doing everything he can to push the underwhelming and underperforming trio out the Anfield exit door.

Despite his agent emphatically stating otherwise before the start of the transfer window, Balotelli does look destined to leave Liverpool after just one season on Merseyside, with Serie A sides Lazio, Sampdoria and Bologna all reportedly interested in the 24-year-old.

With the arrivals of Christian Benteke ($50 million), Roberto Firmino ($33 million) and Danny Ings (tribunal fee to be decided) already this summer, playing time at both center forward and the left wing — two spots in which Balotelli and Borini have occasionally featured for the Reds — look to be extremely limited.

Raheem Sterling included in Liverpool’s roster for preseason tour

As of today, Raheem Sterling is still a member of Liverpool as the striker has been named to the 30-man roster for the Reds’ preseason tour of Thailand, Australia and Malaysia.

Sterling had made the headlines earlier this week when he called in sick from training, and reportedly had told the club he did not want to travel with the side on tour.

After missing training on Wednesday and Thursday, Sterling returned to Liverpool’s Melwood training facilities for practice yesterday.

As the club continues to hold out for an offer of nearly $80 million for his services, Sterling will be expected to board the plane to Bangkok tomorrow.

Not included in the 30-man roster are the names of Mario Balotelli, Fabio Borini and Jose Enrique, which shows their futures at Anfield are up in the air.

Philippe Coutinho and new signing Roberto Firmino will not travel with the team after representing Brazil in the Copa America, along with Emre Can who has been given some extra rest after playing for Germany in the U-21 European Championship earlier this summer.
