Atletico Madrid buys $28 million in-demand attacker Nicolas Gaitan

Approximately $28 million will get you one of the more dangerous attackers in the game.

Nicolas Gaitan, 28, is moving from Benfica to Atletico Madrid after six very successful seasons in Lisbon.

The Argentine winger scored 41 goals in 253 games including nine in 63 across European tournaments.

The acquisition is a strong victory for Atletico, who gets the creative and dynamic wide man. Gaitan can also play advanced in the center of the park, and is with Argentina now at the Copa America.

Portuguese powers Benfica scored twice after the 84th minute to overcome Hulk’s second half header and advance past Zenit Saint-Petersburg into the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals.

Benfica joins Wolfsburg and Real Madrid in the final eight after their 3-1 aggregate win. It was 1-0 after the first leg in Russia.

Hulk put the game on the path to extra time with his 69th minute header, but Nicolas Gaitan scored in the 85th minute and Anderson Talisca scored in the sixth minute of stoppage to cap the game 2-1 and the tie 3-1.

Two very different UEFA Champions League Round of 16 first legs were staged on Tuesday in Paris and Lisbon.

One saw exceptionally physical, fouling soccer punctuated by a stoppage time winner, while another saw a trio of interesting goals send a Premier League side home with the solace of an away goal.

It turned out Edinson Cavani in the role of super sub would steal the show, starting and capping off a well-worked team goal to send PSG into the second leg with a 2-1 leg. Will Chelsea’s away goal end up the difference come March 9 at Stamford Bridge?
