LONDON (AP) — A prosecutor has alleged that former England midfielder Paul Gascoigne sexually assaulted a woman on a train by “forcibly and sloppily” planting an unwanted kiss on her lips.
Prosecutor William Mousley’s comments Monday came as Gascoigne, who has struggled with alcohol and mental-health problems, went on trial at Teesside Crown Court charged with sexual assault of the female passenger.
Mousley said the former England star “put his hands on her cheeks and kissed her forcibly and sloppily on the lips.”
The 52-year-old Gascoigne denies the charge.
The alleged victim has told the court that she froze when the man, who appeared drunk, kissed her in August 2018. She says she did not realize it was Gascoigne until after the alleged incident.

The Premier League club used 3D scans to make sure that anything that’s happened to the original cockerel since 1909 was included in the original, and that includes dents put in the bird by Paul Gascoigne and an air rifle.
The ex-Tottenham and Lazio midfielder admitted used “threatening or abusive words or behavior” toward a black security guard in November at his stage show, “An Evening with Gazza,” in Wolverhampton, central England.
The 49-year-old Gascoigne’s guilty plea came ahead of a trial at Dudley Magistrates’ Court which was due to start on Monday.
British prosecutors said Saturday that Gascoigne will be in court to answer a summons and be charged with an offense of racially aggravated abuse.
Britain’s Press Association said the 49-year-old Gascoigne allegedly made the joke about a black security official at one of his stage shows called “An Evening with Gazza” in Wolverhampton, central England, on Nov. 30. Police have since been investigating a complaint about Gascoigne’s conduct during the show.
One of British soccer’s most gifted players, Gascoigne has faced years of alcohol and mental health problems.
Paul Gascoigne arrested after an alleged drunken assault
Paul Gascoigne’s troubles continue as the former England midfielder has been arrested after an alleged drunken assault at a railway station.
The former Newcastle, Spurs and Lazio midfielder arrived at the Stevenage train station on Saturday and was allegedly drunk and shouting abuse. While it is still unclear exactly what transpired, at some point he is alleged to have grabbed a security guard by the throat. As his wife, Sheryl, tried to intervene, Gascoigne reportedly grabbbed her arm.
A Hertfordshire Police spokeswoman said: “Police were called to a report of a man allegedly being drunk and disorderly at Stevenage railway station at 10.30pm on Thursday July 4. Officers attended the location and arrested a 46-year-old male on suspicion of common assault and being drunk and disorderly.”
Gazza was then taken into custody but not charged. According to the Daily Mirror, Gascoigne was bailed on Friday after being held overnight in a police cell for 12 hours.
The incident is yet another troubling chapter in Gascoigne’s difficult battle with alcoholism. It is a battle that the 46 year old was believed to be winning after spending more than a month at a clinic in Arizona earlier this year. After leaving rehab, he spoke of how the treatment had saved his life and given him the courage to stay sober.
“It has got to inspire me to never let this happen again. I’ve come through that – death. I was dead,” Gascoigne said. “I thought I was on my way out. I looked like a corpse. I was a total wreck.”
