Premier League Team of the Week — Round 37

Southampton and Leicester City hope to be the Premier League’s new guard, and the duo pace the field with five total players in the penultimate PL Team of the Week.

Jamie Vardy, Andy King, and Wes Morgan represent the new champions, who lifted their title trophy after trouncing Everton, while Jose Fonte and Steven Davis are repping Saints.

Sunderland may’ve been the big winner of the weekend, but the Black Cats have only one player in the Team of the Week in scoring hero Jermain Defoe.

Goalkeeper: Artur Boruc (Bournemouth)

Defenders: Ciaran Clark (Aston Villa), Wes Morgan (Leicester City), Jose Fonte (Southampton)

Midfielders: Juan Mata (Manchester United), Ki Sung-yeung (Swansea City), Andy King (Leicester City), Steven Davis (Southampton)

It’s incredible that Karl Darlow is Newcastle United’s starting goalkeeper, let alone a member of the PL Team of the Week.

The 25-year-old Northampton-born backstop is the Magpies’ third-choice keeper, having arrived from Nottingham Forest last summer to learn under Tim Krul and Rob Elliot.

But injuries to both of his international superiors thrust Darlow into the spotlight, and it took him some time to acclimate to the Premier League.

He looked just fine in Newcastle’s potentially massive 1-0 win over Crystal Palace, stopping a penalty amongst several other stops as the Magpies moved out of the drop zone for the first time since February.

Sunderland may not be known for their defense, but two of the Black Cats’ stalwarts have been named to the Premier League Team of the Week for Round 35.

Both goalkeeper Vito Mannone and center-back Younes Kaboul helped Sunderland keep a clean sheet in a draw against Arsenal, pushing the club just clear of the drop.

Chelsea midfielders Eden Hazard and Cesc Fabregas also make the cut, as the duo looked like the star performers we saw last season in the Blues’ win over Bournemouth.

Up top, it’s Manchester City’s young Kelechi Iheanacho and Leicester City’s veteran Leonardo Ulloa, who both scored braces in wins over the weekend.

With just four rounds remaining in the 2015-16 Premier League season, we’re down to our final few selections for Team of the Week.

Heurelho Gomes stopped two penalties in Watford’s clean sheet win over West Brom, becoming the first Premier League goalkeeper to stop two penalties in a match on two separate occasions.

Two defenders from the North East make the cut, as Newcastle’s Jamaal Lascelles and Sunderland’s Lamine Kone help make up the back-line.

Lascelles is joined by his Magpie teammate Andros Townsend, whose goal and assist helped earn Newcastle a vital win over Swansea. Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne is also back in the Team of the Week, having not lost a step after missing nearly 10 weeks with a knee injury.

Up top, it’s hat-trick hero Sergio Aguero flanked by two other goal scorers on the week, Fabio Borini and Daniel Sturridge.

Dieumerci Mbokani‘s last couple weeks surely fit in with the more poignant stories of the Premier League season.

The Congolese striker was a few minutes behind en route to the Brussels’ Zaventem airport, a delay that kept him safe from the horrible terrorist attacks that killed 31 people.

From the Eastern Daily Press:

“At the moment of the explosion, I was on the pavement outside,” Mbokani told Belgian newspaper La Derniere Heure.

“If we had been a minute earlier, we would have been dead. It is my wife who saved our lives. I wanted to get there earlier but she said, ‘Let’s wait for Nathan’ who was on the same flight. She told me he would arrive in a minute or two’. It is a miracle. I stayed calm at the time to assure my wife who was really hysterical. On getting back home, I went to get my boy from school and hugged him.”

Mbokani scored and had another called back in Norwich City’s crucial 3-2 win over Newcastle United, and he earns a place in the Premier League Team of the Week.

The win boosted Norwich four points clear of Sunderland and six ahead of Newcastle in the race for the PL’s final safety spot.
