Bargain Bucket – A look at best free transfers & loans available from Adnan to Yedlin

While the world is focused on nine-figure megawatt transfers and the big-name clubs competing for them, several out-of-contract players and loan possibilities could help teams firm up their chances at everything from a Top 4 spot to Premier League safety.

So who are these names, and how much of a risk would they be?

[ MORE: Tuesday’s transfer rumor roundup ]

Joey Barton — The former QPR and Newcastle man is 32-years-old and has a combustible personality, but is certainly not among the top reasons the R’s were relegated last season. Could fill in the gaps as a minute-eater or final quarter substitute that adds a bit of steel to the side.

DeAndre Yedlin — Those in the know say the USMNT youngster is in high demand as a potential right wing on loan from Tottenham. Will he stay in England?

Ron Vlaar — The Villa man is out until the new year with a knee injury, but could see himself as anything from a lynchpin for a lower club’s defense to a depth move for old boss Louis van Gaal. His health will be a situation to monitor over the Fall months.

Dimitar Berbatov —  Fancy taking a chance on ‘The Incredible Sulk?’ The 34-year-old Bulgarian scored nine goals in 38 matches for AS Monaco last season, seven coming in Ligue 1 play.

Jonas Gutierrez — Certainly a ways off from his days as a plug-and-play midfielder for Newcastle, but the Argentine is a boon to any locker room and can give a lift to any midfield. Can play defender in a pinch, but does seem headed back to South America.

Adnan Januzaj (right) —  For a guy many have tipped for a surefire loan away from Old Trafford, the young Belgian has looked stronger, quicker and more confident this young season under Louis van Gaal… and more importantly he’s been on the pitch, too.

Wilson Palacios — Has the experience in English football if he’s willing to play an ancillary role. Otherwise, it’ll be off to the Championship if he wants to stay in England.

Yoan Gourcuff — Once a hot-button transfer target from Lyon, he has not signed for another club since his contract expired. At age 29, did he wait too long to come to England? Was linked with Arsenal earlier this window.

Michu —  Remember when he lit the Premier League on fire for a brief time with Swansea City? Well Garry Monk doesn’t want him around any more. Perhaps a loan move will do?

Also available for “free”: Oguchi Onyewu, Shola Ameobi, Cristian Ledesma, Carlton Cole.

Premier League 2015-16 season preview: Aston Villa

Aston Villa’s survived relegation by the skin of their teeth last season and it could be another close run thing for Tim Sherwood’s side this year.

[ MORE: All of PST’s season previews ]

After losing Christian Benteke and Fabian Delph to Liverpool and Manchester City respectively over the summer, Sherwood has had the heart of his team ripped out. With plenty of new additions from France’s Ligue 1 who are talented, but unproven in the PL, expect another season of struggle for the Villans. Last season’s run to the FA Cup final provided brief respite for the Midlands club, who are openly on the market as American owner Randy Lerner looks to sell.

The Birmingham-based club have a rich history, winning seven league titles in their history and a European Cup in 1982, but relegation battles have been commonplace in recent seasons although Villa are one of seven clubs to have never been relegated from the PL. Villa’s arch rivals are Championship side Birmingham City, but their local foes in the PL include West Bromwich Albion and Leicester City.

Best possible XI:

—– Guzan —–

— Hutton — Richards — Clark — Amavi —

— Westwood —– Gueye —

—– Bacuna —-  Grealish —- Agbonlahor —-

—— J. Ayew—–

Transfers In: Scott Sinclair ($4 million, Manchester City), Micah Richards (Free, Manchester City), Mark Bunn (Free, Norwich City), Idrissa Gueye ($15 million, Lille), Jordan Amavi ($15 million, Nice), Jordan Ayew ($15 million, Lorient)

Transfers Out: Christian Benteke ($49 million, Liverpool), Fabian Delph ($12 million, Manchester City), Ron Vlaar (Released), Shay Given (Free, Stoke City), Matthew Lowton ($1.5 million, Burnley), Andreas Weimann ($4 million, Derby County), Yacouba Sylla (Undisclosed, Stade Reannais), Antonio Luna (Free, Eibar), Nicklas Helenius (Free, Aalborg BK)

Last season: 17th in PL, Runners up in FA Cup – Villa struggled massively and Paul Lambert was fired in February with the battle against relegation looking grim. Sherwood arrived and helped steady the ship and got the best out of Benteke, Delph and found a gem in Jack Grealish to lift them up the table with some crucial wins at the end of the campaign. They survived. Just.

Villa’s new midfielder, Idrissa Gueye

Star player: Idrissa Gueye – The holding midfielder from Lille comes with a huge reputation and his displays in preseason have drawn rave reviews. Gueye, a Senegalese international, will be in the thick of the battle week in, week out for Villa and is likely to be influential if Sherwood’s side can kick on and move towards the top 10 this season.

Coaches’ Corner: The nickname “Tactics Tim” is perhaps a little harsh on Sherwood as he motivated Villa last season and did what he had to do in order to save a team, which was severely lacking in confidence, from the drop. Losing Benteke and Delph will hurt his chances of succeeding this season, but the board have given Sherwood money to spend and this will truly be his Villa side. A top 10 finish would be a great achievement, but expect Sherwood to be one of the favorites for the sack if they struggle at the start of the season.

PST predicts: Another season of struggle beckons for Villa, but they might just surprise a few people. Sherwood is a young, energetic manager and his side is full of players who have yet to taste the PL or are looking for a second chance to prove themselves. Villa should stave off relegation, but it may not be pretty.

Ron Vlaar out long-term after knee surgery

Former Aston Villa captain Ron Vlaar is out four months after knee surgery, seriously hurting his chances of finding a club before the start of the season.

Vlaar, currently a free agent after leaving Villa Park, has a torn medial meniscus – the same issue he had surgery for in January – meaning the surgery this time around was much more complicated, leaving him with no option but remain on the sidelines for longer this time around.

“After a heavy season with many injuries I was confident the injuries were gone,” Vlaar wrote in a post about his health.

“Part of being a professional athlete is learning how to deal with setbacks in your career, and having the mentality to come back stronger. I have faced tougher situations in my life and always managed to overcome them.”

Vlaar said he was on a trip to India for an ambassadorial trip when he felt his knee wasn’t right. The Dutchman had surgery in Rotterdam on Wednesday.

Now 30 years old, Vlaar appeared in just 20 Premier League matches for Villa last season due to various injuries such as a pair of calf injuries and his initial meniscus tear. He decided to leave Villa this offseason after three years there, moving from Feyenoord in the summer of 2012. Vlaar said in his release that he hopes to play for five more years for both club and country.

With the transfer window officially opening for Premier League clubs on Wednesday, June 10, a full list of the players retained or released by all 20 PL teams from the 2014-15 season has been published.

Safe to say there are some tidy free transfers to pick up.

Although those players on the released section can still agree to sign new deals at their current clubs up until June 30 when their contracts officially expire, the likes of Glen Johnson, Abou Diaby, Micah Richards, John Guidetti, Didier Drogba, Ron Vlaar, Sylvain Distin, Paul McShane, Brad Jones, Jonas Gutierrez, Joey Barton, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Wes Brown, Youssouf Mulumbu and Gareth McAuley have all technically been released.

Surely a few of those players will land elsewhere in the PL this summer?

Here is the full retained and released list from the Premier League’s website, while below are the players released by each Premier League club following the end of the 2014-15 season.
