24-year-old Ghanan midfielder Thomas scored an incredible goal worth watching over and over and over again.
Qarabag defended well all match despite an onslaught from the home side, who put up 35 shots, 11 of them on target. Their solid defending was on display in this sequence, dispossessing a number of Madrid attackers and keeping them away from the center of the field.
Enter Thomas. He takes a skillful backheel flick from Antoine Griezmann, and when nobody expected him to tee it up from an absurd distance, he does just that. Not only does the shot have astonishing pace, the camera angle behind the midfielder catches the curl on the shot, which is breathtaking.
The shot finishing off the fingertips of Ibrahim Sehic is a fitting end to the strike as it nestles in the top corner agonizingly out of reach. What a hit.
Qarabag can feel unlucky, because there’s no way the defenders should have thought to close him down. The goal is the second of the season for Thomas across all competitions, and his first since he scored in garbage time of a 5-1 obliteration of Las Palmas in late August.
The result is a tough pill to swallow, but it’s hard to stop watching that wonderful strike. Take a bow.
Seattle’s souping up its attack with a Jaguar(ibe).
Thomás Jaguaribe Bedinelli, 22, is the latest member of the Seattle Sounders. The former Brazilian U-20 player has spent time with AS Roma’s youth in addition to time with Flamengo and Ponte Preta of his home country, and was also loaned to Siena in Serie A, where he played 12 matches in 2013-14.
While his statistics don’t scream prolific offense, this 2013 video shows an electric playmaker with shifty burst in the vein of Hatem Ben Arfa. Seattle won’t need to lean on Thomás, but is likely hoping for shades of the instant attacking impact we’ve seen with Octavio Rivero’s move to Vancouver.
“We are excited to welcome Thomás to Seattle,” said Sounders FC General Manager and President of Soccer Garth Lagerwey. “He is a dynamic attacking player that has a diverse array of experience despite being only 22-years-old, and we look forward to his contributions to our club.”
Thomás, 22, has made 61 career appearances from 2011-2015 in Brazil’s professional leagues. He logged 19 appearances for Flamengo in Brazilian Serie A play from 2011-2013, in addition to nine more appearances in the Campeonato Carioca. After being loaned to Italian side Siena for the 2013-2014 campaign, the attacking midfielder appeared 12 times in Serie B play. He was then loaned to Brazilian side Ponte Preta in 2014, where appeared 21 times in league and Campeonato Paulista action, scoring one goal.
“Thomás is a player we’ve been tracking for the past three years, and it’s rewarding to finally be able to welcome him to Sounders FC,” said Seattle Sporting Director Chris Henderson. “His technical and attacking abilities are impressive, and he’ll mesh well with our current roster as we move into the second half of the 2015 season.”
We’ll see if his quick moves translate to MLS, and you can witness the silky play below:
